Jivamukti Yoga

Jivamukti Yoga is a style of yoga in which the goal is focused on throughout a rigorous physical practice so you can be empowered to be a vehicle for positive change in the world. In this practice, ahimsa (non-violence), bhakti (enlightenment/god-realization/devotion), meditation, nada (yoga of deep inner listening), scripture and chanting are all present.

Created by David Life and Sharon Gannon in 1984 JY is an intellectually stimulating practice leading to spiritual awareness; a path to enlightenment through compassion to all beings. Each class focuses on a theme, which is supported by Sanskrit chanting, readings, references to scriptural texts, music, spoken word, asana sequencing and yogic breathing practices.

David & Sharon are pioneers in teaching yoga as spiritual activism. The Jivamukti Yoga Method emphasizes vinyasa, scriptural study, devotion, prayer, music, chanting and meditation. Yoga Journal has recognized David Life & Sharon Gannon as innovators in Yoga and the NY Times says, "Without Jivamukti, yoga in the US would still be the obscure practice of a few." TIME magazine recognized Jivamukti Yoga as one of the nine methods of Hatha Yoga taught in the world today.

The Sanskrit word Jivamukti means living liberated. Come and enjoy a practice of peace, joy, love and light; liberating your soul.

Jivamukti Yoga ~ Spiritual Warrior

This is a brisk, guided, led yoga class. The class offers a well-rounded practice that includes a warm-up, the setting of an elevated intention, chanting, sun salutations, standing postures, twists, balances, forward bending, backward bending and inversions, as well as relaxation and meditation, and is designed to be completed in one hour. Thus, it is suitable for those who have limited time to devote to a yoga practice, for those who are looking for a workout to "shape up" physically, and for those who are looking to include a robust posture practice in a manageable daily routine.  Because it is a fixed sequence, a student has the opportunity to progress to the level of mastery by dedicating to a consistent, steady & regular practice.  You can expect to be challenged, but with time and steady practice, progress will inevitably come. The Jivamukti Spiritual Warrior 1-hour sequence is a comprehensive yoga class that transforms, invigorates and energizes, while at the same time grounding and leading the student inward on an exploration of the deeper spiritual aspects of the self.

Jivamukti Yoga: Open

Whether you're a beginner, deciphering the difference between a halasana (plough pose) and sirshasana (headstand) or an advanced yogi, the Open class encompasses all levels. You work at your own pace, following the teacher's constant guidance. A typical Open class consists of flowing vinyasa sequences partnered with Sanskrit chanting, traditional and contemporary spiritual teachings and commentary, breath awareness, meditation, hands-on alignment, and relaxation. We do sitting, standing, and inverted postures, and suggest challenging variations for more advanced students.

Jivamukti Yoga: Basics

If you're a beginner struggling with downward dog or a more advanced student perfecting your shoulder stand, give the Basics class a try. Take advantage of a more intimate environment and focus on the fundamentals. Each week of the month features a concentration: standing poses, forward bends, back bends, and finally, combinations and inversons.
