Q:  What does acupuncture treat?

A:  Most of us know about the great relief acupuncture has brought so many with back pain but less known in the West are the amazing effects of acupuncture in treatment and prevention of the many other ailments such as the common, stroke rehabilitation, fertility and much more. Here’s a list of some of them:

Pain and/or stiffness: Back, Sciatic, Headache, Menstrual, Knee, Shoulder, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Neck, Fibromyalgia and more.

Gyn/Reproductive: Menopausal Symptoms, Menstrual Irregularity, Fertility & Impotence (male & female) and more.

G.I.: Irritable Bowel, Nausea, Constipation, Diarrhea, GERD (reflux), and more.

Respiratory: Asthma, Allergies, Sinusitis, Seasonal Allergies, Colds & Flu and more.

Integrative support therapy: Stroke Rehabilitation, Bell’s Palsy, Trigeminal Neuralgia, High Blood Pressure, Hormonal Imbalances, Diabetes and more.

Lifestyle change & support: Weight Loss, Substance Abuse, Smoking Cessation and more.

Cosmetic: Diminishes Lines & Creases, Dryness/Oiliness, Discolorations, “Face-lift”, Scar Softening, and more.

Miscellaneous: Lowers Stress, Increases Immunity, Relieves Chemotherapy & Radiation Side Effects, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Dizziness and more.

Q:  How does acupuncture work?

A:  Acupuncture has been shown through medical research to work in several ways and yet it has not been fully explained. It remains a subtle energetic mystery that has been treasured and handed down through many millennia and countless generations because it does work

It has been shown that acupuncture increases endorphins, those “feel-good” chemicals the body produces and associated with euphoria. Acupuncture has also been shown to affect the transmission of nerve impulses in complex ways. Some have postulated that the connective tissue of the body is the pathway of the meridians that my teachers tell me a subtle substance called Qi flows through in a healthy body.

If the Qi is blocked or becomes stagnant, pain and poor bodily functions can result. It is my job to move that Qi and support its smooth flow throughout your body. You may not be able to understand exactly how Traditional Chinese Medicine works, but you will definitely know that it does work in ways that bring lasting relief of symptoms allowing your body to heal naturally.

Q:  How long does an acupuncture treatment work? (Initial & Follow-up)

A:  The first treatment will take a little longer because we’ll need to talk about what’s bothering you. I’ll take a family history and listen to details of what you are experiencing now, as well ask questions about your own medical history, medications and life style. Usually an hour and a half is long enough for this initial intake and a first treatment. After that plan on an hour for your appointments.

Q:  How will my symptoms respond?

A:  Everyone’s body responds uniquely to acupuncture treatments. Acupuncture is a subtle energetic form of healing. It is nice to become aware and take note of how our own body responds. Here are some responses to expect:

Initially, it is possible your symptoms may increase slightly for a short while. Do not worry as this response is normal and no cause for alarm. Symptoms should subside within a few hours or by the next night. It is actually a good sign that your body is responding to the treatment.

Alternatively, some people show no response at all for the first 5 or 6 treatments. Be aware that acupuncture is a layering, energetic therapy that will build with each treatment. If you continue to get no response you may wish to decrease the time between treatments. In China it is common for patients to receive treatments for several days in a row. That’s usually impractical in the US; once or twice a week is common. Then as treatments accumulate, fewer treatments spaced further apart will suffice to keep you symptom free.

For other patients, no change is noticed until a day or two after the treatment. Be aware of any changes your body presents as the treatment continues to evoke beneficial changes for up to a week or more after your appointment.

Thai Yoga Therapy

Thai Yoga Therapy is a type of bodywork in Thai style that involves stretching acu-pressure points and deep muscle kneading. This form of bodywork is usually performed on the floor, and the client wears comfortable clothes that allow for movement. No oils are used in Thai massage. It is known in Thailand as "nuat phaen boran".  In Thai Yoga Therapy, the practitioner guides the recipient through a series of yoga postures while palming and thumbing along the body's energy ("Sen") lines and pressures points. Together these actions result in a comprehensive full body treatment that relieves muscular tension, improves circulation, boosts the immune system and balances the body energetically.

Reiki

What is Reiki?

A simple explanation is that Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is an ancient technique for reducing stress, promoting relaxation and encouraging the body into a balanced and healed state of well-being. It is a gentle, subtle, yet powerful energy healing art. Reiki comes from two Japanese words, Rei - meaning higher knowledge or spiritual consciousness (energy); Ki meaning life force or energy. So Reiki is spiritually guided life force energy or Universal life force energy.

What are the benefits of Reiki?

Reiki can lower stress, reduce anxiety, help to lower blood pressure, bring about a deep sense of calm and peace, reduce pain and swelling, balance energy levels in the physical and subtle bodies, balance the chakras, help to release negative thought patterns, illuminate the root cause of disease enabling one to release the energy causing physical illness, help to release old stuck emotions and memories, enable one to let go of anything keeping them from living fully and even catapult one onto a spiritual journey or deepen your current path.

What is a Reiki Session?

Before the session begins the practitioner will have the client fill out an information form and ask some basic questions.  The client will then lie down fully clothed on a massage table.  The Reiki practitioner will gently lay their hands on different areas of the body and allow Reiki energy to flow from the hands to the client.  The session can last 60 or 90 minutes during which time the receiver may experience waves of peace and calm, sensations of hot or cold coming from the practitioners’ hands, colorful visions, memories resurfacing, emotional release or nothing at all.  Many times the client will become so relaxed they simply fall asleep.  Each client will have the perfect experience for them at that moment.
